I've noticed a slot in the inventory for the head, but cannot find anything that would go in there which would have any effects. Am I missing something?

I believe it was for Oxygen level.
In the internal "0_game.dat" file, there are stats that go from 0 to 100 for "health", "suitStatus", and "oxygenLevel".
Of these, only the first two are actually seen in the game. I believe that the "oxygenLevel" was going to be related to something you put in the helmet, but they never finished whatever they were going to do to make it happen.
